Volunteering abroad can be one of the most exciting, learning and rewarding experiences. Volunteering means experience! Experiential learning enhances personal development!

STePs projects can last between 4 and 16 weeks and are designed to offer young and older volunteers combination of reliable and meaningful volunteer work with a direct exposure rich culture of the host country.

If the travelling time is tight, and the volunteers want to find out about the culture of the host country avoiding mainstream tourist routes and activities, the ICDE-India STePs cultural exposure activities offer a wide range of opportunities to immerse oneself into the local culture.

Other Short Term Activities:

In addition to the long-term exchange programmes, a number of ICYE National Committees organize various types of short-term exchange activities for interested individuals and groups. Such activities include group study visits, work camp projects organized together with local community partners in the field of cultural heritage, environment and health education, as well as language courses and cultural studies.

Seminars and Training:

Through its network of members and partners, every year ICDE-India organizes a wide range of thematic activities and training courses. These include seminars on issues such as youth mobility, intercultural education and sustainable development, as well as practical training experiences and international training courses for ICYE staff and youth workers of other youth organizations.

The very process of traveling abroad and staying for is an educative experience and imparts an in-depth practical training in intercultural learning. One develops tremendous self-confidence, self-assurance, acquires new skills, new language, contacts and friends. It is also a process of self-discovery. ICDE has the infrastructure and an excellent network of people and organizations and it is up to the participant to make use of every opportunity to make his or hers exchange programme a unique and personal experience. This program is essentially a cultural exchange and volunteer service program.

Reflection of Step Programme

We worked for 3 months in a school and teaching the children in English. It was the best decision to go to India. We really enjoyed our stay at the Samhitha Academy. Every day was full with new experiences and we really liked the work with the kids. We want to say thank you to ICDE-India for all the support and we were part of such a great project.

Thank you for allowing me to discover such a wonderful country as India! Indian culture, from which I learned only a bit in such a small stay will influence the way I see the world from now on. The children, the host family, the school, the city I will remember them and miss them. I cant wait to come back!

Sara Alexandra Björk, from Sweden

For almost 6 weeks now, I have worked at Samarthanam Trust for disabled and what a time has been. Besides teaching the wonderful children and developing my own skills. I have also gotten a unique experience of India. By being a part of the everyday life, morning to evening, I have gotten an experience I would not otherwise have had. Thank you.
